Have You Heard of Baljenac? The Croatian Island Shaped Like a Fingerprint!

There are islands shaped like hearts, like Mnemba Island near Zanzibar in Tanzania, and there are countless islands shaped like crescents – one of them is Molokini in Hawaii, USA. However, there is only one island shaped like a fingerprint.

Its name is Baljenac Island, also known locally as Bavljenic, is a tiny rarely-visited island in the Adriatic Sea. The oval shape is not the only reason it looks like a fingerprint, it’s the stone walls that line the insides of the island that make it look characteristically different than any other. The walls are human-made and there is a reason why they are there. The island was utilized for some farming activities and the walls were meant to deter the wind from destroying the crops. Gales can hurt crops, and one way to stop this from happening is to have stone walls that act as wind breakers.

The island looks like a prehistoric maze, in a full oval shape. Croatia has requested UNESCO to turn it into a world heritage site.
