‘The Lake’ winner – CHRONOS film festival 2013 & ‘Goldene Stadttor’ ITB Berlin 2014 from geoff tompkinson on Vimeo.

For many years now I have been fortunate enough to live for part of each year on the shore of Lake Hallstatt in Upper Austria.

This video is not about the town – but about the Lake itself.

Hallstatt, the town, is famous for its production of salt, dating back to prehistoric times. It is a very popular summer tourist destination – so popular with the Chinese that they have actually built a replica of the town in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.

The whole area has Unesco World Heritage status. Continue reading

Kuwait does its own “Happy” music video, aims to promote positivity

In a bid to spread positivity, a group of Kuwaiti youth collaborated to create their own rendition of a worldwide phenomenon through a music video. A number of Kuwaiti residents, a long with contributors and volunteers, united to create a Kuwaiti version of Pharrell’s first Billboard #1 hit “Happy” from the soundtrack of the movieDespicable Me 2. Other cities have also completed and released their videos including Dubai, Amman, Hong Kong, London, Amsterdam and scores more.

Now, Kuwait has joined forces with most countries in the world in creating its own version of the music video. Like many others, the Kuwaiti version of the “Happy” music video aims to promote positivity and embrace diversity throughout the interwoven fabric that creates this beautiful and colourful nation’s spectrum. The optimistic song serves as a backdrop to many cheerful video contributions from more than 150 residents of Kuwait regardless of age, race, gender, cultural background or lifestyle.

The intention was to reengineer Pharrell’s “Happy” song into an effective message locally by filming specified locations within the city as well as reintroducing “Free Kuwait” t-shirts which were worn during the Gulf War as people were demanding the liberation of their country. Today the youth are maintaining the atmosphere of liberation in spreading positivity and celebrating freedom of expression.

The video is the work of filmmaker Mohammad AlSaeed and is the idea of director Taibah AlQatami.  It was shot at a number of locations around Kuwait during February 2014. Many contributions were personally submitted for inclusion and have been incorporated into the music video. The project is done under Weoritu, which is a global institution that promotes positive change through the medium of art.
